The Route to Partnership: still harder for women?

Newly qualified solicitors are now more likely to be women than men. However, women are still concentrated in the lower ranks of the profession, making up less than 25% of law firm partners.
This low proportion of senior female lawyers is to some extent due to the recent arrival of women into the profession in large numbers. Law Society statistics from last year show the average age for qualified solicitors as 38 years old for women compared to 44 for men. It is to be expected, therefore, that the gender imbalance among senior lawyers will resolve itself as more women enter the pool of potential partners.
