Law & Justice Forum, College of Law – Women in Law: Finding Balance – Tuesday 1 May 2012
The Law & Justice Forum invited Tracey Storey, Partner at Irwin Mitchell, Constance Briscoe, a leading criminal barrister at 9-12 Bell Court and Women in Law’s Stephanie Haladner to speak to law students at a forum on the challenges facing women in the profession and to highlight the steps the profession is taking to advance women.

What Corporations Such as GE look for in Diverse Teams at Law Firms – Wednesday 14 September 2011
Tish Clyde is Global L&E Counsel for GE Healthcare, a medical diagnostics, life sciences and healthcare IT business with revenues >$17bn and 55,000 employees. GE Healthcare is part of GE, a diversified technology and financial services multi-national with revenues >$200bn and 300,000 employees worldwide.
Prior to joining GE, Tish was a partner in the law firm of Charles Russell in London and, before that, she was an associate with Allen & Overy. Tish studied history at Trinity College, Oxford before becoming a lawyer.
In 1999, Tish moved in-house to GE’s financial services business as L&E Counsel for Europe. In 2003 she joined Barclays as General Counsel for L&E before being recruited back to GE Healthcare in 2004. In this role, Tish is responsible for developing L&E strategy for GE Healthcare, driving HR compliance, anticipating new social legislation/key risks for the business as well as managing global employee relations, L&E litigation and supporting M&A transactions.
Neil Harnby is General Counsel for GE Capital, Europe. Previously a banking partner at Linklaters since 2004, Neil moved to GE for the newly created role in 2009. Prior to Linklaters, he was an associate at Denton Wilde Sapte and legacy Rowe & Mawe, now Mayer Brown.
An Uplifting Evening with Reema Pachachi – Thursday 30 June 2011
Drinks, diamonds and a woman of substance…
Women in Law hosted a networking evening and private sale with jewellery designer Reema Pachachi. Following a postgraduate degree at the Royal College of Art, Reema launched her own business, selling her designs through Harvey Nichols, Harrods, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. In 2001, she became the first Creative Director of De Beers LV. Her groundbreaking designs for the luxury brand, including the Millennium Star Pendant, first worn by Iman, showcase her meticulous attention to detail and subtle originality. She is currently Visiting Professor of Jewellery at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London.
Reema’s commitment to making women feel confident and uplifted through their jewellery is undiminished, having recently launched her new jewellery brand: Kuka-me. Moving from Lawyer to Non-Executive Director – Wednesday 8 June 2011
This seminar was part of the Major, Lindsey & Africa 2011 seminar series and explored issues faced by lawyers and women when transitioning from lawyer to non-executive director. Our speaker, Ruth Markland, has been at the forefront of women in business her entire career. The former managing partner of Freshfields’ Asian operations and director on four boards including Standard Chartered Bank, she shared her experience and provide women in law who aspire to be on boards with advice on how to navigate this difficult transition.

Women in Law invited its members to the Women in Business and the Middle East Association Spring Networking Reception on Tuesday 29 March with guest speaker Caroline Plumb, CEO of FreshMinds Group and UK Business Ambassador. Caroline co-founded FreshMinds Group in 2000 after graduating from Oxford. Today it consists of three award-winning agencies covering recruitment, consultancy and social media. Caroline is one of the UK’s 30 Business Ambassadors appointed by Prime Minister David Cameron. Making Work-Life Balance Work – 9 February 2011
This seminar explored how one can effectively leverage excellence to negotiate flexibility, addressing the competing concerns of employer and employee in achieving work-life balance. Susan Revell, co-general counsel at Morgan Stanley provided her perspective as a manager of a large team of lawyers over the last decade.

Doing Business in Asia – Women’s Enterprise Evening, Thursday 18 November
PAWA (Pan Asian Women’s Association) in partnership with Standard Chartered Private Bank and the FT presented Doing Business in Asia. The Asia economy is predicted by many to become the world’s economic driver. A recent IMF report predicts that the economy will grow to 50% over the next five years. Chaired by Louise Lucas, Consumer Industries correspondent, FT. Sarah Hewin, Senior Economist at Standard Chartered discussed the ‘Shift of Power to Asia’; Sabe Tibbitts, International Trade Advisor, UKTI discussed the support and services available from the UKTI and Dr. Sally Ernst, Entrepreneur and Investor shared her experience of building a business in Asia.
